The river crab is a Chinese internet slang term for internet censorship. In Chinese Mandarin, the word ‘river crab’ sounds similar to ‘harmonious’ in the word ‘harmonious society’. The concept of the ‘harmonious society’ was adopted by the Chinese government in 2004, and is usually cited by them as the reason for censorship.
The grass-mud horse is a mythical creature (described as a lively, intelligent and tenacious alpaca) created in a hoax article published on China’s equivalent of Wikipedia. It is a play on the Mandarin words ‘cao ni ma’, which literally mean ‘f**k your mother’. River crabs (symbolising Chinese internet censorship) invade their habitat - and so the grass mud horse (symbolising defiance against censorship) is at war.
The Chinese military suppressed the Tiananmen Square protests by force in 1989, with the iconic photograph of a protestor moving to block tanks taken the following morning. A photoshopped version of the original image circulated on China's version of Twitter in 2013, with huge rubber ducks in place of the tanks. This sparked censorship of the words ‘big yellow duck’.
